The benefits of fasting4

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Ramadan Kareem!

It means, ” have a generous Ramadan” or “noble Ramadan”

May this temporarily life on earth be blessed with peace & harmony. May this Eid shower you with health, happiness and affection of your loved ones and may it reach you closer to God. I wish you a blessed Ramadan. After being in an accident and still on my journey to recovery, I’m feeling blessed to get an opportunity for a second chance in life, I was wondering what that means for me this year and how can I join Ramadan within my health conditions.

Here are some of many benefits for this holy month I would like to share with you;

  • Improved mood and mental purity

Studies (Fontana L, Klein S. Aging, 2007) show that fasting can make the brain more resilient to stress, more adaptable to change, and can improve mood, memory and even learning capacity. Fasting can be a great way so charge your brain, sharpen our responses to information and increase growth and development of new brain cells.

  • Regulates bad cholesterol and overall fitness

A recent study found that fasting also affects the lipid profile. This results in reducing blood cholesterol, which can keep heart attacks, strokes and other diseases in check. Fasting puts the body under mild stress, which make our cells adapt by enhancing their ability to cope. Or as we know it, they become strong. This is also happening when we are exercising (Medicine and science in sports and excursive, 2007) and our muscles and cardiovascular system are stressed, our body can only grow stronger during these processes when there is adequate time to rest and recover. Best time to exercise is recommended just before sahoor (before sunrise) or a few hours after iftar (Sun down).

  • Restrain appetite

As our body gets used to eating less, your digestive system gets a chance to rest and your stomach shrinks in size. So for the ones that were planning to lose weight, the results can last longer than many diets.

  • A period of time detox and increasing in energy

Fasting not only class your body from harmful toxins that might be present in fat food, but it also uses your fat reserves. Having your digestive system on over-time, your body naturally detoxifies. It also makes your metabolism work a lot more efficiently. Your body relies on the intake of carbohydrates as its primary source of energy. These are broken down into glucose and get released into the bloodstream. As a response to the blood sugar in the veins, the body increases insulin (Al Shafei, 2014)- the fat that synthesizing and storage promoting hormone. as you are fasting the glucose and insulin drops, and your body will look for another source of energy and turns to burning fat for fuel. This gives you the opportunity to continue a healthier lifestyle and reaches you to get that’ summer body’ you have longing for.

  • Religious benefits

Fasting demonstrates the depth of your desire when praying for something. A way to cleanse your soul and empowers your spiritual level. This also brings more awareness. It shows you that you are serious enough about your prayer request to pay a personal price. God honors deep desires and praying in faith.

Let me start with the things that are allowed;

  • Pour water over yourself and go under.
  • Puts kohl, eye drops or anything else on or in the eyes
  • Rinse the mouth and nose without swallowing the water
  • To taste liquid, food or something one wants to buy, however anything edible should not be swallowed
  • Eating, drinking, or having sexual intercourse with your partner during the night until sunrise
  • If you eat or drink something unintentionally
  • It’s not obligatory to perform ghusl before start of the day, but its recommended to to be clean before start of the fast
  • When menstrual or postnatal blood stops at night, a man can delay ghouls until morning and fast. However she should perform the ghusl before the morning prayer
  • You can use a toothpick or brush to clean the teeth. It doesn’t matter if tis happens at the beginning or end of the day
  • Swallow anything that is moist with saliva when you wake up.
  • Anything inedible that accidentally enters the mouth (smoke, dust and the taste of medicine applied to teeth) does not invalid the fast.
  • Ejaculation caused by looking or thinking does not invalidate the fast nor does having a wet dream, but perform the ghusl afterwards.

There is always an opposite of everything and these things will break your fast;

  • If you intentionally eat, drink, smoke or have intercourse, because it is believed that the sun has not yet sett or it is not yet fajr.
  • Swallow blood that is created in combination with your saliva, swallow your tears or sweat and you can taste the taste.
  • When you have to vomit more than a mouthful, or when you intentionally swallow it again.
  • Ejaculation in any kind of way
  • Menstruation and postnatal bleeding, even if either occurs just before dawn
  • Injections, whether for food or medicinal purposes. It also does not matter whether the injection was given intravenously or subcancaneously, or whether the injected product has reached the stomach or not. (J pak Med Assoc 65,2015)
  • Drinks or medicine that passes through the throat or nose. However water entering though the ear is allowed
  • Fluid that enters the body though the rectum.

Some elderly and people with chronically sickness are exempt of fasting, because fasting would cost them more effort. They should provide a poor person with a meal for everyday missed. While pregnant of breastfeeding people will have to qodr, fast on another day, and before the next Ramadan starts. (child: care, health and development,2001)

Many are born with a religious background and fasting became a yearly activity where they are born into, because it is one of the five pillars of Islam and they don’t know better. As I’m  not a scholar, if there is something stated incorrectly or I have given you misinformed information please don’t shoot the messenger, but check this with a scholar or imam. Either way, there are health benefits for the non-believers and religious + health benefits for the believers among us. If you do feel like trying, I’m sure to say, any believer will invite you with open arms and let your first time be magical. Also, having spend my Ramadan in other countries and several times alone, which I also enjoyed, it was always nicer to have someone to spend it with. I sincerely hope you will reach your goal!

Sending positive energy and have a spectacular journey,

The FO-UR Team

Trouble with my name? Don't worry, you're certainly not the only one. I respond to Natrah. A globetrotter who has changed her dreams into goals, is eager to learn and turns her passion into work so she doesn’t have to “work” a single day.
